A new director for the CIA.IS Dorothée Kirch has been appointed Director of the Center for Icelandic Art for a term of five years, starting 1 March 2010. She replaces Dr. Christian Schoen who has served as Director of the Center of Icelandic art for the last five years. She will take over in beginning of March. See the official press release [2.2.10]
Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson to represent Iceland at the Venice Biennale in 2011 The Spanish-Icelandic artist duo Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson have been chosen to exhibit on Iceland’s behalf at the 54th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2011. Their work is characterized by their at once attentive and critical, analytical and emotional gaze and their interest in identifying the many questions that the present raises. THE END - Ragnar Kjartansson at the Venice Biennale On November 22nd Iceland's representative at the Venice Biennale 2009 finished with his last brushstroke his six month endurance performance in the beautiful Palazzo Michiel. 45.000 visitors came to see his performance along with the 5-channel video installation. Center for Icelandic Art seeks new director Deadline for applications: November 23, 2009 The Center for Icelandic Art was established in 2005 with the key role of presenting Icelandic visual artists abroad. It is an independent institution, primarily funded by the Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. All the main visual arts institutions and associations in Iceland are members of the institution. The new director will be the successor of Dr. Christian Schoen, CIA.IS’ founding director, who has build up its international reputation over the past five years. LIST #24 is out. We visited the Icelandic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale where 30.000 visitors were counted so far. A special focus lies on the brothers Ásmundur and Snorri Ásmundsson. International Conference YOU ARE IN CONTROL The conference explores the latest digital business developments and investment available in music, media and the arts. This innovative international conference takes place in Reykjavík on the 23rd & 24th of September 2009 and has been planned to coincide with both the Reykjavík International Film Festival and Nordisk Panorama. Book launch: Icelandic Art Today Icelandic Art Today is the first book of its kind to present in English a wide array of Icelandic contemporary artists born after 1950. Thirteen well known writers of various nationality join hands in writing about 50 artists who have been prominent during the past decade or longer. Venice Biennale: The Pavilion of Iceland 2009 Ragnar Kjartansson, Iceland's representative at the 53rd International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, introduced his project to the national and international media in a press conference on May 12, held at the National Gallery of Iceland.. Opening the next round: 11 Artists at CIA.IS' DVD archive The CIA.IS' selective video archive provides insight into the wide spectrum of the Icelandic art scene. It is a rotating presentation of 11 artists who work in all different kind of media are introduced in this DVD-archive. Venice Biennale: The Pavilion of Iceland 2009 The beautiful Palazzo Michiel dal Brusà will be again the venue for the Icelandic Pavilion. "Iceland facing economic storms" is the headline of the 21st issue of LIST. The impact of this crises on the art life is the main topic of this last issue in 2008. However, the art scene is active and will be in the very difficult new year. Kling & Bang's Sirkus at Frieze Art Fair. Memories of Reykjavík nightlife are being preserved and presented to the international art world at Frieze Art Fair in London this October 15-19. A downtown bar, Sirkus, which was closed down by developers earlier this year is being lovingly recreated with original furnishings and decor as part of the Frieze Foundation Projects by the artists of Kling & Bang Gallery in Reykjavík. The third SEQUENCES real-time art festival, October 11-17 2008, presents a jam-packed program with time-based work, such as performances, sound art, video and music. NICE08 - complemantary to LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL 20.09. -30.11. NICE08 is the first Nordic Art and Culture Festival to take place in the UK. It sets the scene for long-term collaborations, exchanges, cultural and economic developments between the UK's Northwest and the Nordic Countries. Opening of Manifesta7 On July 19 Manifesta7 will open in South Tyrol. The Italian town Rovereto will host one of the four exhibitions venues. For his show in a former tobacco factory curator Adam Budak from Poland has chosen amongst others Margrét H. Blöndal, Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson and Ragnar Kjartansson. REYKJAVÍK ARTS FESTIVAL 2008 The Reykjavík Arts Festival launches on May 15, 2008 with a groundbreaking series of visual and performing arts programs that will involve most of the city’s exhibition spaces and extend to other locations in Iceland. CIA.IS support program The Center's major grants were given out. In 2008 11 artists were granted for their projects with a total amount of 3,2 mio ISK. A special grant of 1 mio went to Margrét Blöndal, Ólafur Ólafsson & Libia Pérez and Ragnar Kjartansson for their participation at Manifesta7. Each 400.000 went to the Icelandic Love Corporation, Birta Guðjónsdóttir, Halldór Ásgeirsson and Kling & Bang gallery and 200.000 to Katrín Elvarsdóttir, Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir & Hlaðgerður Íris Björnsdóttir and Magnús Árnason. In addition to that flight vouchers from Iceland Express were given to Ransú, Kling & Bang gallery, Ingunn Fjóla Eyþórsdóttir, The Weird Girls Project and Gunnlaug Dröfn Gunnarsdóttir. BOZAR FESTIVAL, 27.2.-27.4. Center for Fine Arts, Brussels With three exhibitions Bozar Festival will formally open on 26 February. The main exhibition, curated by Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir, is called Dreams of the Sublime and Nowhere in Icelandic Contemporary Art and includes artist like Hrafnkell Sigurdsson, Hreinn Friðfinnsson, Icelandic Love Corporation, Ragnar Kjartansson, Kristján Guðmundsson, Ólafur Elíasson, Sigurdur Guðjonsson, Steina Vasulka and many more. This show, realised in collaboration with Reykjavík Art Museum will be seen during Reykjavík Arts Festival in May. The latest issue is out! Iceland's first and only online art magazine focusses this time on the HOMESICK show in Akureyri and the nominated artist for Venice Biennial 2007 Steingrimur Eyfjörd. It reports among other matters also on the Carnegie Art Award and introduces the promising young artist Sigurdur Gudjónsson. See: www.artnews.is [23.6.06] The decision has been made that Steingrímur Eyfjörð will repesent Iceland in the next Venice Biennale in 2007. Steingrímur's career in art began in the mid-1970s and he was an active member of the group of artists that formed Gallery Suðurgata 7 in the late 1970s and has exhibited persistently since, honing his hypercritical approach to produce shows of surprising delicacy. The organising institution will be the CIA.IS - Center for Icelandic Art and Christian Schoen is nominated as commissioner/curator. [08.6.06] Opening the next round: 11 Artists at CIA.IS' DVD archive In May 2005 the CIA.IS opened its doors for the public. The institution at Hafnarstraeti 16 is the first location in Iceland where visitors can gather all relevant and up-to-date information on Icelandic artists and art institutions. A selective videoarchive provides insight into the wide spectrum of the Icelandic art scene. It is a rotating presentation 11 artists who work in all different kind of media are introduced in this DVD-archive. CIA.IS support program: Announcement of the awarded artists For its first round in 2006 CIA.IS received 65 applications for its grant program. The awarded artists or projects are: Bjargey Ólafsdóttir, Ransú, Eygló Harðardóttir and Sólveig Aðalsteinsdóttir, Katrín Sigurðardóttir, Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, Ragnar Kjartansson, Birgir Andrésson, FUGL. Winter Festival Reykjavík - Museumnight: Fax and DVD In cooperation with SÍM– The association of Icelandic Visual Artists CIA.IS are proud to present a fax exhibition by more than 40 international artists that have stayed in the SÍM residency during the past three years. In addition to that CIA.IS will introduce another 11 Icelandic artists for the DVD archive. The artists are: Anna Líndal, Bjargey Ólafsdóttir, Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, Hlynur Hallsson, Hreinn Friðfinnsson, Húbert Nói, Ingólfur Arnarsson, Kristján Guðmundsson, Sara Björnsdóttir, Steina Vasulka and Tumi Magnússon. CIA.IS – Center for Icelandic Art is cooperating with Rijksakademie Amsterdam in their Research Residency. The deadline for handing in applications at Rijksakademie is postponed: March 15! All Icelandic, professional artists who wish to apply for this highly profiled program should read carefully the instructions below or on www.rijksakademie.nl and should apply directly to Rijksakademie. Besides that please give the CIA.IS notice of your application (send a mail to info@cia.is). This is necessary because the CIA.IS can recommend artists who have applied to Rijksakademie. [15.01.06]
